W. G. Ross papers, 1898-1918.

Diary (1902 May-June) kept by Ross while serving in the U.S. Army Quartermaster's Dept. assigned to the screw steamer Dixie on a relief expedition to victims of the 1902 eruption of Mount PeleĢe, Martinique. Contains a detailed description of the destruction of St. Pierre and the experiences of John G. Morris and Charles W. Evans who were rescued from the passenger steamship Roraima that was destroyed in the blast. Diary also contains a list of officers, journalists, and scientists accompanying the expedition, a list of supplies taken to the victims, several sketches, and newspaper articles. Also includes photographs and a program.
